Prof. Roland Tomb is a physician and a researcher based in Beirut. He graduated from Paris (M.D.), Strasbourg (Dermatology, Allergology, Pharmacology) and Marseilles (Ph.D. in Philosophy and Ethics).
He first practiced and taught medicine at the University of Strasbourg and in its Medical Center. Arriving in Lebanon in 1994, he took over the Dermatology Department at the Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital, and began his teaching in dermatology at the Faculty of Medicine of Saint-Joseph University.
Quickly appointed associate professor, then full professor, he retained the head of the Dermatology Department from 1980 till now. He leads a department where care and research went in hand.
He supervised dozens of theses in medicine and science, and published more than 450 articles in international journals, not to mention communications, conferences, courses and participation in international congresses.
He organized many international congresses in Lebanon: the French-speaking International Congress, the Mediterranean Congress, the Pan-Arab Congress, etc.
Prof. Tomb was president of the Lebanese Society of Dermatology, vice-president of the International Association of French-speaking Dermatologists and honorary member of the French Society of Dermatology.
He participated in the writing of various textbooks in allergology and dermatology and published a dozen of books dealing with dermatology, history and history of medicine. One of his latest books, entitled "History of Circumcision", published in the prestigious French collection "Que Sais-je ?" has enjoyed real editorial, critical and public success.
Elected Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the USJ in 2011, he was re-elected in 2015 and 2019, serving three successive terms (12 years) as the head of this prestigious Faculty. Renovation and development have been his watchwords. He did everything possible to encourage research A parallel medicine/science curriculum has been offered to medical students: this training, unique in Lebanon, allows them to obtain, in parallel with their Doctorate in medicine, a Master's degree in research.
He has also contributed to the creation and development of numerous Research Laboratories: regenerative medicine, cancer and metabolism, cardiac physiology, renal physiology, and developed a Surgical research laboratory, unique in the region, attracting practitioners from all over the Arab world.
He created a Simulation Centre at the Faculty of Medicine, probably the largest, most developed and best equipped in the Middle East. In addition to Basic Research, he also developed Clinical Research by creating a Clinical Research Centre at the Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital.
Since 1994, he is holding the Chair of Bioethics at the Faculty; he was a member of the Lebanese National Ethics Committee, member and rapporteur of the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC) at UNESCO in Paris, where he represented Lebanon, then he joined, for eight years, the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) at UNESCO (Paris), holding the position of vice-president and organizing in Beirut the major UNESCO bioethics symposium, with the participation of experts from 32 countries.
Finally, his work has allowed him to be recognized not only at UNESCO, but also at the Collège de France where he was unanimously elected in 2022 Visiting Professor of this prestigious institution. He is also president of the Regional Commission of Economic and Scientific Experts of AUF (Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie)

In September 2024, he was appointed director of the Université Pour Tous (USJ, Beirut). Having pursued studies in theology (Strasbourg University) and ancient Semitic languages (Sorbonne University, Paris), he coordinates the Chair of Phoenician Studies (USJ, Beirut)
On 19 May 2014, Tomb was made Officer of the Lebanese Order of the Cedar
